South Central Foundation Head Start - Anchorage, Alaska

In August, 2001 Sherry Bertram, BMCC's Virtual College Program Coordinator, and Evelyn Petersen, BMCC's online CDA instructor visited South Central Foundation Head Start in Anchorage, Alaska.  South Central has five students enrolled with us online.  Sherry and Evelyn traveled to Alaska to do a presentation and training for the staff.  We enjoyed our visit so much!  Here's some of the highlights of our trip and the wonderful new friends we made. We arrived on Saturday evening. On Sunday, our new friends from South Central picked us up and we headed off for an Alaska Glacier cruise in Seward. We stopped on the way to see the mud flats and look for mountain sheep. A wonderful fellow took our picture together. Left to right is: Adam, South Central Family Services, MaryEllen, South Central Director, Sherry, BMCC Program Coordinator, Evelyn, BMCC Online Instructor, Kim,South Central Teacher, Bob, South Central Bus Driver and Jack of all trades, and Tara, South Central Early Head Start.
Next stop on the way to Seward was at a wonderful lake to enjoy the beauty of Alaska. Left to right: MaryEllen, Evelyn, Bob, Adam, and Kim.
MaryEllen was very friendly with the bears.
While we were walking around Seward, Evelyn decided to ride a local moose.

The cruise was splendid! We saw sea lions, whales, puffins and glaciers.

Pictures don't do justice to beautiful Alaska .
We had fun walking around Seward and seeing the sights.
We stopped at a beautiful waterfall in Seward. This is the South Central staff enjoying themselves :0)
MaryEllen took Evelyn and Sherry to the Alaska Native American Museum. This was a wonderful experience. We saw Alaska Natives creating beautiful works of art. (I don't remember what was so funny)
We toured the five Tribal villages set up behind the museum.
Sherry and Evelyn went downtown to Anchorage a few times. We ate at a wonderful outdoor restaurant and did some shopping. Sherry liked this bear so she wanted her picture taken with him.

Geneva, another wonderful employee at South Central, took Evelyn and Sherry to the Chocolate Factory.
They have the world's largest "chocolate" waterfall. Yum Yum!

Evelyn did training with the staff at the center for three days. I think they all learned a lot and had a bit of fun as well.
The staff got to be their children.

Evelyn made sure that everyone behaved. :0)
Some of the ladies sang us a beautiful song at the end of the training.
My dear friend. Thank you to MaryEllen and her staff for being so wonderful to Sherry and Evelyn. We enjoyed our trip to Alaska very much.
