EMT Basic, Specialist, & Paramedic - Certificates of Completion & Associate of Applied Science

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic certificate of completion will prepare students for a job in the emergency medical field. Students will be trained in basic life support, patient assessment, and management of medical and traumatic emergencies. The Basic certification will include lectures and practical experience in aspects of emergency treatment and transport of patients to emergency departments. The student must complete forty-eight (48) hours of emergency department and ambulance clinicals. EMT Basic is a pre-requisite for the EMT Specialist and Paramedic programs.

EMT Specialist certificate prepares the EMT Basic to deliver more advanced care during an emergency. The student will learn skills in advanced airway management, intravenous and intraosseous cannulations, and some medication administration. The student must complete an additional forty-eight (48) hours of emergency department and ambulance clinicals.

Paramedics certificate and Associate of Applied Science program is designed to prepare the EMT Basic for the highest level of emergency medicine. The student will learn advanced techniques of administering care in life-threatening conditions and to reduce disability. It will also teach the students to recognize the signs and symptoms of most life-threatening illnesses and injuries and to effectively manage them. EMT paramedics are employed by advanced life support ambulances, emergency departments, critical care units of hospitals, tactical teams, industrial medicine, and sports medicine groups. State licenses are required. The student is required to perform 250 clinical hours in emergency departments and ambulance services, along with 250 hours of an internship program.

Employment Information

“Employment of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Emergencies, such as car crashes, natural disasters, and acts of violence, will continue to require the skills of EMTs and paramedics.” (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018)
