Learning Outcomes and Assessment

2025 BMCC Graduates after moving their tassel

What are Student Learning Outcomes?

Student learning outcomes (SLOs) are statements that describe what students are expected to know, understand, or be able to do by the end of a course, program, or educational experience. These outcomes are typically specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). They serve as benchmarks for assessing student achievement and are often used to guide curriculum development, instructional planning, and assessment strategies. In essence, they articulate the intended results of the educational experience for students.

General Education Program

The purpose of the General Education program at BMCC is to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to be an engaged community member who contributes positively to society and continues to grow personally. BMCC believes that graduates should possess competency in the following areas: communication, critical thinking, diverse perspectives and cultures, technological literacy, and quantitative reasoning.

The college’s General Education Committee has identified five (5) institutional learner outcomes (ILO’s), which are assessed in each curricular program.

The ILO’s identified are:

  • Communication: Students will compose information and concepts in oral or written format.
  • Critical Thinking: Students will formulate an evidence-based solution for a situation or problem.
  • Diverse Perspectives and Cultures: Students will explore diverse perspectives and cultures with emphasis on the Native American community.
  • Technological Literacy: Students will apply technology relevant to their field of study.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Students will analyze problems using quantitative analytical skills.

Program Assessment

Program assessment focuses on assessing student learning to determine whether graduating students have acquired the skills, knowledge, and competencies associated with their program of study. The results from the assessment process provide information that can be used to determine whether intended outcomes are being achieved and how the program can be improved. The assessment process is intended to inform faculty and other stakeholders about relevant issues that can impact the program and student learning.
