Computer Science - Web Development

The Computer Science – Web Development program at Bay Mills Community College is designed to give students a strong foundation in building and maintaining websites and web-based applications. Web development itself is the process of creating the websites and tools people use every day, from simple informational pages to dynamic platforms for business, education, and services. It involves both front-end development, which focuses on the layout, design, and interactivity of a site, and back-end development, which handles data, logic, and communication with servers and databases.

Over the course of two years, students in the program are introduced to the core technologies that power the web, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the browser, as well as server-side tools such as Python, SQL, and Linux. Through hands-on coursework in Web Page Design, UX/UI Design, Web Programming, and Mobile App Development, students learn how to bring web-based projects from concept to deployment. They also gain experience with broader technical areas like database management, computer programming, network technologies, and web server administration.

Throughout the program, students build a working understanding of how web systems function as a whole, from writing clean, functional code to managing files and deploying content across platforms. They also learn how to communicate effectively in professional and client-facing environments. By the time they complete the degree, graduates will be able to design, manage, and maintain a range of web technologies and will be prepared to keep pace with changes in the modern web landscape. Whether building a personal portfolio, launching a business site, or contributing to a larger team, web developers play a key role in shaping how people experience and interact with information online.
